LP Monday Message: 193 Libertarian Candidates File in Texas; Other News

January 11, 2010

Dear Friend of Liberty,

January 4, 2010 was the deadline to file for office for the November 2010 elections in Texas. An impressive 193 Libertarians filed. I think several others had hoped to file, but they missed the deadline. Texas has the earliest filing deadline for the November 2, 2010 elections.

Deadlines vary by state. Please don’t wait until it is too late. If you’re considering running for office, please review this earlier Monday Message: Here’s How to Run for Office.

Many other states are putting together slates of candidates. For example, according to www.calfreedom.net: Nearly 100 LPCA Candidates Seeking Signatures For 2010 Ballot Access.

In some states it is much harder to get candidates onto the ballot than in others. Some states require petition signatures and filing fees, while others do not. Nevertheless, if you are in a state where few or no candidates have run recently, don’t be intimidated by the huge number of candidates in those larger states. I hope you’ll work with your state party to get at least a few candidates onto the ballot. In order for the Libertarian Party to be a strong advocate for freedom nationwide, we need candidates in all of our states.

I hope to see some of you in Austin, Texas this February 27-28 at the Libertarian State Leadership Alliance conference. The conference is open to anyone interested in the future and direction of the Libertarian Party. Traditionally, many of our state and national party leaders attend. While there are some official training sessions, I have found the most valuable part of attending is being able to network and talk informally with other Libertarian activists.

The LSLA event is separate from our National Convention which is coming up Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-31, in St. Louis. I’m expecting the Convention Committee to create a website with pricing and registration instructions in a matter of days.

Sincerely,
Wes Benedict
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee
