NRA PAC suppresses third-party candidates

The NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) claims on its website that "The NRA-PVF ranks political candidates - irrespective of party affiliation - based on voting records, public statements and their responses to an NRA-PVF questionnaire."

However, Libertarian candidate Lon Cecil reports:

NRA has released their 2010 Voter Guide to the web (http://nrapvf.org/grades-endorsements.aspx) to support election of 2nd Amendment supporters to the various Federal elections in 2010. In many races they do not recommend a particular candidate, but rate each candidate’s response to their extensive questionnaire.

In the North Carolina guide for US House District 12, however, Libertarian candidate Lon Cecil is not listed, despite being an NRA member for nearly 20 years and filing the questionnaire last July. The Voter Guide lists an F-rated incumbent and only one of two stronger 2nd Amendment supporters.

Looking over the entire guide, it is clear only Democrats and Republicans have been listed, once again. With the emergence of Tea Parties and other freedom and Constitutional grassroots movements this year, the NRA PVF guide exhibits a DC-myopic view of the American political process.

According to technical support in the NRA PVF Federal Candidate office near Washington, modern NRA computers are unable to handle the large lists that would be required to include third party candidates in their voter guide.

This is the same argument used by the State of North Carolina to restrict party access to the ballot, due to possible “voter confusion.” That issue is currently subject to consideration in a lawsuit under review by the North Carolina Supreme Court. Without third or fourth parties on the ballot, voters are denied choice in our legislative elections.

NRA members should contact the NRA PVF and request they change this discriminatory policy and update the online ballot to display all candidates that appear on the printed state ballots.
