Replacement election for LNC vacancy fall 2012

A message for party members regarding a vacancy on the Libertarian National Committee:

With the resignation of Wayne Allyn Root from the Libertarian National Committee, there is an opening for an At-Large position.

The procedure specified by our Bylaws gives full authority to the LNC to elect a replacement. Nominations are now being accepted from members who are interested in serving. Anyone who is a sustaining member of the LP and is not a candidate of any party except the LP is eligible to place their name in nomination. A sustaining member is any Party member who has given at least $25 to the national LP in the last twelve months, or who is a life member.

This replacement election may or may not take place through a mail ballot of the LNC members. If the election has not happened by early November, LNC Chair Geoffrey Neale expects that this position will be filled by a vote at the next LNC meeting, which is scheduled for November 17th and 18th at the Crystal City Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

National LP Chair Geoffrey Neale asks that anyone interested in serving in this position submit a one- to two-page nomination to both chair (at) lp (dot) org and secretary (at) lp (dot) org .  This will serve both to nominate the member's candidacy and to affirm their willingness to serve so that LP headquarters staff does not have to investigate the latter.

Chair Geoff Neale and Secretary Ruth Bennett suggest that nominees submit the following information:

  • your name, telephone number, email address
  • a statement that you are seeking the open LNC at-large position and will commit to attending the meetings at your own expense
  • the year you joined the National LP and your member number
  • a summary of your libertarian credentials
  • a summary of your non-libertarian qualifications to sit on a board
  • a short statement of what you feel you bring to the LNC, and
  • any potential conflicts of interest

Geoff Neale says, "I want every nominee to recognize that being a member of the LNC represents a significant investment in both time and money.  Each LNC member pays his own travel and lodging to attend LNC meetings.

He continues, "Should the LNC choose not to elect a replacement by Friday November 2nd, I would prefer that all nominations be submitted by that date so that the LNC can review the nominations before our next LNC meeting. I intend to have this replacement election be one of the earliest items on the agenda.  Once nominations are opened, all previously submitted nominations will be considered.  At that time, other nominations may be made by any LNC member, but cannot be made by anyone outside the LNC.  Once nominations are closed, I intend to give any candidate that is present one or two minutes to speak on their behalf.  After the voting, the winner, if present, will be welcomed onto the LNC, and will immediately be able to participate in the meeting."
