Tricia Weathers was elected to the Box Elder, South Dakota city council on April 12. She received 76 votes. Her competitor, Al Levine, obtained 56 votes.

Ms Weathers had been appointed to the seat last fall after the position was vacated. The election was to fill out the remainder of the three-year term. The office will be up for election next April.

Box Elder is a city of over 9,300 people in the western part of the state, east of Rapid City.

Ms Weathers owns her own travel agency, and her husband works in aviation at the Rapid City Regional Airport.

She is possibly the first Libertarian ever elected to office in the state.
