Sundwall files to run in special congressional election

New York LP chair seeks seat vacated by Kirsten Gillibrand

New York state Libertarian Party chair Eric Sundwall has filed a campaign committee to enter the special election for the 20th Congressional District seat vacated by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

“We actually feel that given this particular election, if there is a low turnout, strange things can happen,” Sundwall, who plans to formally announce his candidacy next week, told the Glen Falls Post-Star.

To get on the ballot, Sundwall will need to collect 3,500 signatures within 12 days of Gov. David Paterson scheduling the special election.

Libertarian Party of Washington State Convention scheduled March 28

The Libertarian Party of Washington will hold its state convention Sat., Mar. 28, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Issaquah.  The convention opens at 9:00 a.m., with the business session beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The convention will select a new Executive Committee, workshops on grassroots organizing, social media and communication Libertarian solutions.

Scheduled speakers include former Libertarian National Committee Chairman Dr. Jim Lark and Nirvana bassist and co-founder, and current chair of Fair Vote, Krist Novosleic.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- America’s third-largest political party urged the Senate Wednesday to reject the nomination of Eric Holder to be Attorney General, citing his record of hostility to Second Amendment rights.

“The Attorney General is expected to defend our Constitutional rights, not infringe them,” said Libertarian Party spokesman Donny Ferguson, “Americans value the precious rights protected by the Second Amendment, and they demand the Senate reject this nomination.”

Indianapolis City-County Council Reappoints Two Libertarians

Press release from the Libertarian Party of Marion County, Ind.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Indianapolis City-County Council has voted to reappoint two Indianapolis Libertarians to the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals in Indianapolis for a one-year term. Timothy J. Maguire was confirmed in a 29-0 vote on January 12, 2009 to the Zoning Board of Appeals, Division I, of which he is currently the Chairman.

Barr: No Defending DOMA

In 1996, as a freshman member of the House of Representatives, I wrote the Defense of Marriage Act, better known by its shorthand acronym, DOMA, than its legal title. The law has been a flash-point for those arguing for or against same-sex marriage ever since President Clinton signed it into law. Even President-elect Barack Obama has grappled with its language, meaning and impact.

I can sympathize with the incoming commander in chief. And, after long and careful consideration, I have come to agree with him that the law should be repealed.
