Dear Friend of Liberty,

It has been a pleasure serving as your Executive Director for the past 2 1/2 years. I feel like we've accomplished a lot over this time, and I thank you all for your support of the LP.

However, in September I gave 90 days notice that I was leaving the job of Executive Director at the national headquarters in Washington, D.C. at the end of the year because I'm getting married and moving back home to Louisiana.

Libertarians say Bill of Rights Day is reminder of need to downsize Big Government

WASHINGTON - Today, December 15, libertarians celebrate Bill of Rights Day.

On December 15, 1791 the Bill of Rights was ratified, creating the first Ten Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

The Libertarian Party platform expressly supports the Bill of Rights and calls for restoring our freedoms lost as a result of laws passed in violation of the Constitution by Democratic and Republican politicians.

Indefinite detention provisions are wrong

"I'm not sure what to laugh at more: the 'super committee,' or the media's reporting of it.

Lobbyists too powerful because government is too powerful

WASHINGTON - Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle released the following statement today:

"President Obama is currently caught in a bit of a scandal over his pledge not to take campaign money from lobbyists.

"According to the New York Times, 'Despite a pledge not to take money from lobbyists, President Obama has relied on prominent supporters who are active in the lobbying industry to raise millions of dollars for his re-election bid.'

Libertarians to Occupiers: Crony capitalism is the problem

WASHINGTON - Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle released the following statement today:

"I have been following the Occupy protesters, who call themselves the '99%', with interest.

"It's true that 99% of Americans do not enjoy the special benefits of crony capitalism. Crony capitalism is very different from real capitalism. In crony capitalism, government hands out special favors and protections to politically well-connected businesses.

WASHINGTON - Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle issued the following statement today:

"Associated Press reports today that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is telling Congress they must not cut federal spending sharply. Chairman Bernanke, you're wrong.

"The federal government is currently spending somewhere around 24% of America's total economic output -- even more if you ignore the government's accounting gimmick of 'offsetting receipts.'

Libertarian remarks on Constitution Day

WASHINGTON - In honor of Constitution Day, Libertarian Party Executive Director Wes Benedict released the following statement today:

"Tomorrow, September 17, is Constitution Day: the anniversary of the agreement on the U.S. Constitution by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787.

"When I think about that anniversary, I am saddened by how far we have strayed from our original respect for the Constitution. But I am hopeful for the future.
