About the Candidate
I was born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas, a fifth-generation Kansan. I graduated from Buhler High School and went on to graduate with honors from Wichita State University. I attended law school at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona and graduated with honors. I spent time as an appellate judicial clerk at the Arizona Court of Appeals in Phoenix, Arizona, but most of my professional career has been spent as a public defender in Kansas. I have worked for the State Board of Indigent Defense Services for more than ten years, primarily representing presons before the Kansas Court of Appeals and the Kansas Supreme Court.
I have been married to my wife, Marlana, for thirteen years and we have two boys, Daniel and Andrew. Marlana is a bookmobile associate at the Topeka-Shawnee County Public Library. We are active members of First United Methodist Church in Topeka. I currently serve on the local church Board of Trustees and on the Kansas East Conference Board of Ordained Ministry. And I serve as treasurer of my boys' Cub Scout pack.
