Why Liberals and Progressives Should Consider Voting Libertarian This Year
If you consider yourself liberal, odds are strong that you are opposed to the war in Iraq, to the Patriot Act, and to other forms of domestic spying.
The odds are also that your Democratic Party representatives and candidates voted for the war in Iraq and voted for the Patriot Act. In fact, the Patriot Act passed in the Senate by a vote of 98 to 1.
It’s pretty well known that prominent Democrats like Hillary Clinton and John Kerry voted in favor of Bush’s Iraq War Resolution.
When a gay marriage ban was proposed in Alabama, one writer suggested that Democrats were tripping over one another in order to be the first to introduce legislation which ensures that homosexuals won’t be entitled to the same laws as straight couples.
There are even Democrats who consistently vote against measures which make it easier for the sick, suffering and dying to receive treatment with the use of medicinal marijuana.
Unlike many Democratic candidates, Libertarians don’t waffle when it comes to extremely important issues like these. Our position is clear, coherent and principled.
Now that public opinion about the Iraq War has changed, many public officials are stating that they wouldn’t have voted for the war in Iraq if they knew then what they know now. Libertarians led the way by opposing military intervention in Iraq based on principle, not on the latest polling results.
Across the country, Libertarian candidates are challenging not just Republicans, but also Democrats, for their position on the war. In Connecticut, Libertarian congressional candidate Phil Maymin frequently confronts Republican Chris Shays about his support of military intervention in Iraq. Democrat Diane Farrell’s position on Iraq is so weak that Maymin is campaigning on the fact that Shays and Farrell are politically interchangeable – a point not missed by MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson.
In Washington state, Libertarian Bruce Guthrie is also strongly opposed to the war. He’s running for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Maria Cantwell and Republican Mike McGavick. Cantwell’s position on Iraq is so weak that the Republican is running television ads praising Guthrie for having the courage of his convictions about the continued U.S. presence in Iraq.
Even in Tom DeLay’s old district in Texas, Libertarian congressional candidate Bob Smither has introduced a common sense exit strategy that even Republicans applaud.
Libertarians have been fighting for election reform for years. If it had not been for Libertarian Michael Badnarik, there would have been no lawsuit in Ohio to challenge the 2004 presidential election results there. Michelle Shinghal, a Libertarian county chair in Texas, recently exposed the latest Diebold issue, one where Democrat and Libertarian votes were recorded as Republican votes.
Like you, Libertarians are frustrated about the children being left behind by No Child Left Behind. We’ve adamantly opposed to the use of torture, secret prisons, people being held indefinitely without due recourse, a military draft, and nation-building intervention. We believe in the separation of church and state and believe that government should not be able to interfere in our private lives.
Many Democratic politicians don’t represent the values that you find important, but Libertarians welcome the opportunity to open our doors for you. You can send a strong message to the Democratic Party by voting for one or more Libertarians on Election Day.
After you’ve taken that step, we encourage you to consider becoming involved with the Libertarian Party. If you believe in peace, freedom and prosperity, we’ll hold the door wide open for you.
