Libertarians have finished their petition drive for the 2000
presidential election nearly three years early -- and the state government
doesn't like that one bit, said state party leaders.
More than 60 LP members contributed over $2,000 in November to make
the final payment to petitioners. Shortly thereafter, the Secretary of State's
office proposed legislation that would outlaw early signature gathering.
"Yes, the Kentucky LP is causing special legislation to be written,"
said State Chair Carl T. Wimmer, who vowed to join with other third parties to
fight the measure.
