‘In a While’ Not Soon Enough for Libertarians
President Bush’s plan to reduce the troops ‘in a while’ is another sidestep in his refusal to confront a failing campaign in Iraq
Washington, D.C. – While speaking Tuesday at an event in Ohio, President George W. Bush stated that he may begin troop withdrawal from Iraq 'in a while,' but prefers to wait for a September progress report on the troop surge in Iraq.
With casualties in Iraq continuing to mount and support of the war continuing to dissipate, more Americans are demanding that troop withdrawal begin immediately, and not 'in a while.' The Libertarian Party, which has continually opposed the invasion and occupation of Iraq, agrees with and supports these sentiments that are spreading throughout the nation.
"So far this month, 28 American troops have died in Iraq while the Iraqi government failed to take action, and support from the American public reached an all-time low," says Shane Cory, Executive Director of the Libertarian National Committee, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. "Yet Bush still continues to say it will be 'a while' to end a war that should have never begun."
The Bush administration has repeatedly said over the course of the war that the Iraqi government needs to take a leading role in the conversion to a democratic state. However, news agencies are reporting that a new report to be issued on Iraq will state the Iraqi government has not met a single benchmark the Bush administration has established for them.
"We want to make it clear: It's not that our troops are failing in Iraq," says LNC Media Coordinator, Andrew Davis. "It's that Bush has failed our troops and refuses to accept his mistakes, not to mention reality. In the meantime, taxpayer's money is being burned at an astounding rate, and most importantly, human lives are being lost."
"President Bush says we're in this war to win it, but he has yet to state what will constitute a victory in Iraq," says Cory. "We're well past four years now since Bush stood before a banner that read 'Mission Accomplished' on the deck of the USS Lincoln, and yet we are still sending troops overseas. Before and after the invasion, George Bush's version of the mission in Iraq has shifted dependent upon what the American public would swallow. Was it stopping WMDs? Liberating Iraqis from tyranny? Fighting Al-Qaeda, or something entirely different? Now the mission of the United States in Iraq is crystal clear: Bring our troops home as quickly and as safely as possible, and allow the Iraqis to govern their nation as they see fit. Saying we'll accomplish this mission 'in a while' shows gross disrespect to our troops, the Iraqis and the world."
The Libertarian Party believes in a non-interventionist foreign policy, and strongly opposes the war in Iraq.
The Libertarian Party is America's third largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties.
