Nick Taiber

City Council,

Election Date: June 3, 2009

Location

Cedar Falls, IA

About the Candidate:

Nick Taiber runs for city council at large

NickPhoto Cedar Falls is a great place to live, and keeping it great requires initiative, fresh thinking, and a willingness to listen to ideas from everyone. I will bring unique perspective, bountiful energy, and careful leadership to the Cedar Falls City Council.

When Molly and I chose to return to the Cedar Valley, we surveyed all cities in the area to determine the best fit for the needs of our family. Cedar Falls stood out for its Quality of Life - schools, recreation, culture, low taxes, beauty, faith options, and city services. Clearly, Cedar Falls is a reflection of community values, citizen commitment, and excellent leadership.

There are great opportunities for our city. While everyone's vision for Quality of Life is different and its direct measure subjective, stable or increasing property values reflect robust demand - more is right than wrong and Quality of Life must be good.  It is the duty of elected officials to listen and lead, to implement policy and actions, to respect rights of citizens and property, to serve Quality of Life.

But there are many needs competing for a scarce resource to improve our Quality of Life - the tax dollar.  I will strive to lower our taxes, to be the city's best steward of city revenues, and to use resources and assets in a manner of greatest return to the citizens of Cedar Falls.

Libertarians urge Supreme Court to toss out Illinois gun bans

Sub-Title:

Senators urged to question Sotomayor on her Second Amendment views

WASHINGTON – America’s third largest party Wednesday urged the Supreme Court to hear an appeal challenging handgun bans in Chicago and the Illinois village of Oak Park, and to rule such gun bans violate the Second Amendment.  A U.S. Court of Appeals panel ruled Tuesday that it could not hear challenges to the anti-gun ordinances filed by both the National Rifle Association and attorney Alan Gura after the Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that a handgun ban in the District of Columbia was unconstitutional.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Have I said, thank you?

You’re the best, you really are! Maybe the stock market bounce yesterday got everyone in a good mood, because the stock photo drive was a resounding success! I received many wonderful pictures that I will definitely be able to use in videos, pamphlets, flyers, and other promotional materials. I can’t wait to get to work on these photos.

LA Times: Children achieving more in schools freed of government oversight

The Los Angeles Times takes a look at the American Indian Public Charter and its two sibling schools, independent charter government schools, are outperforming schools that operate under government supervision.

It's an eye-opening look into what education reform -- a top Libertarian issue and one championed by Nobe Prize-winning libertarian economist Milton Friedman -- can achieve.  The Times reports, in part:

Statement on General Motors bankruptcy filing

Sub-Title:

Taxpayers, competing companies at risk

WASHINGTON -- Libertarian  National Committee Chairman William Redpath issued the following statement today:

Republican Senators neuter Federal Reserve Transparency bill

    It’s time to pick sides…

While the world watches Susan Boyle lose the top prize and cowers in the wake of the dreaded swine flu, the world financial crisis deepens and worsens. The American people are slowly waking up to fiscal realities as our iconic car dealerships and banking establishments flounder in an ocean of red ink. Everywhere we turn something else blows up, and we can’t seem to find a bottom to the stock market. Prices seem inflated much beyond what government measurements are reporting.
