Have time for a quick survey?

Dear Friend,

We need your input. At the last meeting of the Libertarian National Committee, the headquarters staff was asked to present a proposal to outsource our monthly publication, LP News.

Before moving forward with any proposals from organizations interested in producing LP News, we want to get a better understanding of what you expect from LP News in the months and years to come.

We've created a short, online survey that will give us a better feel of those expectations and I ask that you take a few minutes to complete the survey to record your opinion.

To access the survey, click here.

Once you're done, you can view the results of the survey to see how other supporters of the party feel about the outsourcing of LP News.

I appreciate your assistance on this project.

Best Regards,

Shane Cory
Chief of Staff
Libertarian National Committee

P.S. If we get a good response from this survey, expect more of them to come on a variety of topics. If you have any suggestions, add them in the comments below.

Reader Comments:

Awesome to hear that LP Newsis considering splitting and that this kind of feedback is part of the process.

I would suggest more of a magazine format with a website that compliments it similar to how The New Yorker is published (a mesh of free content and subscription features). And I would also recommend a PDF-format subscription where some of us can just download it each (month, bi-monthly whatever) instead of getting it in the mail.

Personally, I'm hoping the redesign will feature more varied libertarian viewpoints. That would be exciting, and more inviting to the potentials.

I also think that there should be a monthly "Member Profile", along with a brief interview. It's nice to hear about electorates and such, but it's the members within the LPO that I find most interesting.

Dagnabbit, I meant the LP, not LPO.

I’ve thought for awhile that LP News should begin transitioning over to an entirely web-based publication, and although it may be a bit soon to abruptly terminate the hard copy of LP News immediately, that may be the best option, given the current circumstances.

Back before the internet became so important in politics, the LP News publication was crucial for keeping members informed and connected. However, now and in the future, members should be staying informed and connected on a daily basis at LP.org, not by getting an out-dated monthly “newspaper” in the mail 12 times per year.

I think a cost-benefit analysis of keeping LP News going as is as a “membership premium” would be extremely negative. It costs a lot! And its benefits are minimal already, let alone when it becomes an optional “premium” few people will pay for. Instead of spending money to keep on producing LP News, the money would be better spent on a full-time media guy for the LP and LP.org to write daily news stories, features, etc., plus blog at the LP blog, write press releases, do interviews and so on.

LP NEWS is a valuable asset to the party.

Not only is it an excellent way for the general membership to know what is going on all throughout the entire national party... it can be used as a useful outreach tool.

There should be an online version for those who want it, but the paper version once a month must be maintained. It is just that valuable.

Also, please remember... not everybody has the internet, we can't just isolate the part of our party that isn't surfing.

LP going into disaster relief? With the incredible quantity and quality of organizations in those efforts already, that's not too bright. I believe Libertarians - and the public could be much better served by being informed which organizations are putting their contributions to the best uses, with the smallest percentages of donations siphoned to overhead. The Salvation Army and Covenant House get my donations. Are there better ones serving comparable purposes?

Shane:

anyway we can keep track of the poll results after we have voted on it, the same way we can see entrys on the Iraq Exit Strategy? I'd like to report more on the results but I cant access the current tallys.

1. Send out newsletter only to those who request and might not have internet access to cut cost down. Post news letters here.

2. I still see nothing is being down about getting thing in mode for election. It nice you guys help others and the etc. But we have someone in power that is playing G-d and those who is following him.

3. If we do not get serious about this election time around, you can forget it.

I liked the fact that a survey was taken -- surveys of the membership should be a regular feature at LP.org. Why not find out what Libertarians think, instead of guessing?

A moderated message board open to LP members would be a great idea, too.

News of internal party business and activities should move to the web. The LP News should still be printed, but focus on LP accomplishments and libertarian solutions to issues that mainstream voters care about.

It is important that the newspaper qualify as a genuine newspaper exempt from McCain Feingold or any other scheme to muzzle free speech. The press is still free. Party afiliation of the owners should not be relevant.

My local library would not let me leave them in the lobby with the other newspapers. I think we could get a public-interest law firm to take our case if we publish pro-libertarian news and anyone tried to stop us using campaign finance laws.

I always assume our "enemies" are reading it. We should also assume our potential friends are reading it and not call them names (e.g., Republicans and Democrats). Only the first copy costs a lot of money to produce. Copies are cheap. We ought to expand our circulation.

Posted by: Sandra at October 5, 2005 08:08 PM

What do you mean "copies are cheap"? They still have to PRINT off the other copies. They're the same cost as the first copy. I'm not sure what you mean Sandra.

Posted by: John at October 5, 2005 10:25 PM

Yes lets expand, everyone of us libertarians, can go door to door and leave it at the house.
Maybe give it to people who enters grocery stores. Maybe a booth set up at fairs and trade shows.
MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE A WINDOW STICKER THAT SAYS LP.ORG FOR FREEDOM

Posted by: FOR FREEDOM at October 5, 2005 10:32 PM

There already is an online version of the paper and it should continue to exist. However, the hardcopy must be maintained for those of us who dont like reading online or quite simply enjoy kicking back and reading an actual paper instead of staring into a computer monitor.

Is it possible to set up newspaper stands for the LP NEWSPAPER? maybe charge 25 cents. Feedback on this please.

Posted by: FOR FREEDOM at October 6, 2005 04:47 PM

The social workers in Vermont are regularly out in front of the main shopping mall (and even the public library) trying to sell the socialist news rag for a $1 a copy. I always congratulate them on being good capitalist when I see them. Perhaps we need an outreach version of the LP News.

For party news, could LP News be merged with Liberty Pledge and then it would be sent to monthly pledgers.

Posted by: Hardy Machia at October 7, 2005 12:03 PM

How about merge with the Paul Revere Party who believe in freedom. And any other party that believe in Freedom. At least for the help of getting Libertarian in office. I wonder how the Veterans feel.

As part of the new zero-dues LP membership plan, they're looking to outsource LP News as a "membership premium". Unless plans have changed substantially, I think they're planning to keep LP News going as it is now with Daniel Cloud as editor. However... [Read More]
