Alaska May Be Ready to Give Up the "Bridge to Nowhere"

Mark Tapscott reports in his blog that Alaska could be ready to give their "Bridge to Nowhere".

We welcome your thoughts on this issue.

Reader Comments:

Why don't we let Sen. Ted Stevens pay for the "Bridge to Nowhere" himself. That would make all parties happy (except Stevens).

See, if I lived in the town, I would just get the city council together and rename the city "Important Place In".

That way, when someone on the news talked about it, they'd have to say something about "The bridge to nowhere, which if constructed would go to Important Place In, Alaska."

Anyone remember the "Escalator to Nowhere" on The Simpsons?

Posted by: jnice at November 14, 2005 06:25 PM

Man, the Simpsons did everything first.
I am glad to see this little project is faltering though. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're very nice people up there, but if we're going to get taxed out the wazoo, there are better places to spend the money. Like pointless trips to the moon, for instance. Or maybe illegal resource driven wars. Perhaps we could find some dictatorship somewhere to prop up. I'm sure they're already on this.

A bridge to nowhere, similar to the Golden Gate bridge would be nice, and in many respects, quite remarkable. Nevetheless, we should be frank... not with tax-payer money.

Ironically, from what I understand, not even the residents who this bridge is designed to serve want it. They are happy using the boat.

Let's face it, it's so this senator can have an ego trip, and get his name on a new highway.

I plan on moving to Alaska, in part BECAUSE it's the only place left in North America where the infrastructure isn't based on cars. This bridge is a waste of money-if Stevens really wants to "bring home the bacon", he'd at least ask for some upgrades to the Marine Highway or the Alaska Railroad. Those, at least, are useful.

I guess our lawmakers' mentality up here is "Build it and they will come". That would be great for the tourism industry because so many Americans are anxious to see where their tax dollars are being spent.

Why are we not targeting on things that need
improvement, like our Libertarian party? We need to work harder, as 2006 and 2008 are just around the corner.

Also, this Alaska bridge news is old news. This LP needs to keep current.

Top news comes from things like Yahoo News, Msn News,
and Drudgereport.com just to name a few.

For Freedom,

it's called a follow up on a prior post. Dood. :)

All I really have to say is, what a waste of money. Last I checked, Alaska was pretty far in the hole economically...this is probably the last thing they need.

I just heard that Alaska was the only state with a budget surplus.

"in the hole economically"?

QUOTE: "Why don't we let Sen. Ted Stevens pay for the 'Bridge to Nowhere' himself."

That's the best solution I've ever heard for this. Stevens gets the bridge he demands, and we get to keep our money.
