Republicans Looking to Wrap Themselves in a Security Blanket

Roll Call on Thursday reports how Congressional Republicans are going try to tie as many issues as they can to national security:

With crises popping up around the world, Congressional Republicans are looking to exploit their traditional political advantage on defense matters by placing a growing number of issues under the national security umbrella.

One Republican lawmaker explains why his party is wrapping itself in a security blanket (via Roll Call):

In a speech at the Heritage Foundation Wednesday laying out the GOP's agenda for the year, Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) made a similar argument about the centrality of security issues.

"It all starts with our commitment to keeping America safe," Boehner said. "The world is a dangerous place today, with crises across the globe. It's just one more reminder that Republicans have carried the burden of leadership during some pretty difficult times."

Under Republican leadership, the United States has become less safe and less free. The military has become bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan. This has emboldened America's enemies like Iran and North Korea. Now Iran is having its proxy, the terrorist group Hezbollah, spread more instability in the Middle East by attacking Israel.

Reader Comments:

" Now Iran is having its proxy, the terrorist group Hezbollah, spread more instability in the Middle East by attacking Israel."

Why is this stated as fact?

I haven't seen anything to prove that Iran is using Hezbollah as a proxy to attack Israel. And it seems to me, Israel's doing more attacking than Hezbollah is...

Bush blames Syria; LP blames Iran; neither cites proof that those countries are running the show.

It is a proven fact that Hezbollah receives alot of their funding from Iran and Syria. Those missiles aren't cheap you know.

I just read a article by Neo-Conservative William Kristol of the "Weekly Standard." In the piece entitiled "Our War," Kristol called for the United States to engage in a preemptive strike against Iran. Kristol wrote "...our focus should be less on Hamas and Hezbollah and more on the paymasters and real commanders-Syria and Iran." He continued to write "For while Syria and Iran are enemies of Israel, They are also the enemies of the United States...." and that "we might consider countering this act of Iranian aggression with a military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. Why wait? Does anyone think that a nuclear Iran can be contained?"

The answer is "yes." I believe that a nuclear Iran can be contained. It worked during the Cold War. The United States has its hands full with Iraq and Afghanistan.

Iran is not a threat to the United States. If the Iranian President and the Mullahs declared war on the U.S., then there would be no choice but to fight. For Kristol to advocate and call for another war is wrong and dispicable.

As far as the conflict between Isreal and Hezbollah is concerned, Isreal has a good and strong military force. It can handle the terrorist group without the United States coming in. Contrary to what Willam Kristol might think, this is not our fight. This is not our war.
