Leading Conservative: No longer call yourself "a Republican"

Here's the scoop from WND:

One of the architects of the Reagan Revolution is calling on fellow conservatives to withhold support of the Republican Party establishment - including most GOP incumbents in Congress this year.

Richard Viguerie outlined his plan to punish the GOP for a couple of years:

* Withhold financial support from Republican committees and most Republican incumbents.

* Withhold support from all 2008 presidential candidates.

* No longer call yourself "a Republican" but rather a Reagan Republican or a Reagan conservative.

* And work for wholesale change in Republican leadership.

Viguerie is not calling for an ultimate defeat GOP. He thinks it can be resurrected if they take some short term losses. Many Libertarians gave up such hopes years ago; others never entertained such hopes in the first place.

In the article, Viguerie was very critical of federal spending by so-called conservatives:

Viguerie compares spending by the federal government, adjusted for inflation, during the Clinton years vs. the Bush years. In Clinton's first term, federal expenditures rose 4.7 percent. In his second term, they rose 3.7 percent. In the first term of the Bush administration, however, spending rose 19.2 percent.

Here's my suggestion to fiscal conservatives who are looking for some place to dump their contributions (while sending a strong small government message) for the next couple of years.

Reader Comments:

If you want smaller government, don't give your money to people who don't actually support smaller government (give it to LP instead).

Logic for the win!

How about just call yourself a Libertarian? LOL...

Yes I along with many other Americans loved Reagan. However, he was not a true Libertarian. After all, it was he and his wife that led the fight against marijuana legalization and other such issues.

I'd still take him over anyone else on the current political stage for president (present company excluded of course).

Does it matter whether conservatives choose to fund the Republicans or not? The Republican Party only needs to start preaching to the Christian Right in order to drum up support. They hardly need secular conservatives at all. Besides, even the best conservatives are still conservative. They are not pro-freedom, no matter how much lip-service they give libertarians. The LP needs to sever its love-hate relationship with the Republican Party once and for all. The point is: Who cares if conservatives hate the party that they created? Either an individual has a right to his life, or he doesn't. Neither the liberals nor the conservatives want to commit to an answer.

There is a great book by John Dean (new) called "Conservatives Without Conscience" which details the difference between the Fiscal Conservatives of the Goldwater campaign (me) and the Bush Conservatives (GOP) and explains exactly why the One World Order of the neoconservatives are the enemy of a free America. I joined the LP in 1989 when I discovered the One World Order but found little action in the party and went with Perot in 92. I have voted LP but without membership because I am not convinced the party means individual rights across the board. I'm checking it out on November 3, 4, 5 at a Convention in Arizona and will question the rights of all Americans, not just white, Christian, straight men, if you get my drift. I want all my rights, not just those mentioned in the bible. I will list them if anyone wants.

Some liberal friends jokingly say "Barry Goldwater was the last honest conservative.". Unlike most of the Libertarians, I was a Democrat. I saw, as did Karl Hess, that when it comes to opposing big government, many times conservatives will talk the talk but won't walk the walk. They supported a constitutional amendment to ban abortion and another to ban burning the flag. Many support the Patriot Act and Nation Building. Mr. Viguerie, if you truly want to stand for opposing big government, not just in cases where Conservatives do, but also in cases where Liberals do, have we got an answer for you. LIBERTARIAN!

With this in mind, more and more members of the "Religious Right" now see both the Republican and Democratic parties for what they are: a false antithesis.

This is an opportune time for Libertarians. With some kindness and education, I'm convinced that a majority of the RR is ripe for Libertarianism. In fact, I'd like to see an initiative in that regard. Many great Christian leaders of the past were more Libertarian in their thinking than "conservative" or "neoconservative": Machen and Kuyper for instance. We need to share this kind of information.

In this regard, an encouragement and suggestion to Libertarians everywhere: avoid the mean-spirited rhetoric against Christian conservatives. It's indicative of weaker minds and counterproductive. With some work, these disillusioned Republicans could become huge allies.

Only problem is PK they want to FORCE their religious beliefs on everyone. If they could learn to dial that crap down a bit, you would be right. I am suspicious of those who are too insecure or sanctimonious to live with the reality that not everyone is a "believer".

For my own part, I have been giving the following "guidelines" to any candidate who wants my support, needless to say I have received many "interesting" reactions:

• Sign a pledge that you will actively support the shut down and de-certification of the Federal Reserve System and PERMANENTLY ban central banking in the Republic, only Congress constitutionally has the power to coin, distribute and create money.
• Return the economy to the Gold Standard with backing and accountability for currency.
• Return America's gold to Fort Knox and have it audited.
• Have Congress and the Internal Revenue Service, in a public forum; reveal the law that makes it mandatory for non-corporate INDIVIDUALS to pay a direct, unapportioned tax on their labor.
• Support the repeal of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, or as it was never legally ratified by the lawful number of the states, jettison it from the Constitution and close down the Internal Revenue Service.
• Totally privatize Social Security within 10 years with the option to participate or not.
• Restore that part of the Social Security Act making it illegal to use that number as a form of identification.
• Repeal the War Powers Act restoring Congress to its Constitutional responsibility to declare war.
• Repeal the Patriot Act as it now exists, resubmit it only with those sections pertaining to interagency law-enforcement intelligence sharing intact thus promoting security without violating Constitutional rights.
• Rescind the law called the Real ID Act so Americans never have to carry a National ID Card.
• End the doctrine of “Sovereign Immunity” on all levels of government where malicious intent, incompetence, conspiracy, corruption or willful violations of the law are established to have been committed by government officials. Establish a special independent Grand Jury to determine the validity of these cases.
• Enforce usury laws applying them to banks, lenders and Credit Card Companies with civil and criminal penalties.
• Return the Federal Bankruptcy Laws to the pre October 2005 standard.
• Cap attorney fees, again make it illegal for lawyers to advertise and go to a “loser pays” system in civil cases.
• End the domination of the Democratic and Republican parties over our political system by allowing ALL parties to equally and fairly participate, including National Debates, a true Constitutional democracy is plurality of ideas.
• Make computerized voting illegal in all 50 states, paper ballot only with a witnessed, certified Public count.
• Keep the internet free and out of the control of large institutions.
• Make it illegal to implant RFID chips in human beings unless it is completely voluntary, reversible on demand and restricted to a sole purpose. If Court ordered as a replacement for an ankle bracelet tracking system, to be IMMEDIATELY removed upon completion of or satisfaction of that portion of the sentence.
• Mandate all GPS technology to have a complete Off Switch, which cannot be remotely activated for all adults over 18 years of age.
• Repeal NAFTA, CAFTA and GAT. End tax breaks for companies that go offshore for labor.
• Close the internment camps being constructed nationwide, or designate them as communities for the permanent control of incurable sexual predators.
• Educate juries to the fact that they have the right to determine the law as well as the facts of a case.
• Educate juries to the fact that they are not obligated to follow the instructions of a judge.
• Enforce oaths of office and require bonding for ALL public officials and require them to be on file to the public. Arrest and impeach officials who do not defend and enforce the Constitution, INCLUDING sitting Judge’s.
• Remind Bailiff’s that they are Law Enforcement officers not Judge’s private armies.
• Protect our borders, rigorously enforce immigration laws.
• Prioritize the development for alternative fuel and energy sources, including solar, geothermal, wind, cold fusion, hydrogen and nuclear. Make the restoration of the environment a National priority.

I agree with you, Chuck. However, I do think a kind-hearted, non-inflammatory educational initiative directed toward members of the Republican party in general and the "Religious Right" in particular could help the latter...to borrow your phrase..."dial that crap down a bit!" Good thought.

I have a problem even calling myself Libertarian or even Independent... but you have to call yourself something. I was a Republican, or I THOUGHT I was until I was introduced to the LP and realized that I was more in tune with LP ideals and principles than any other party or group. I really believe most Republicans I meet, once you talk to them for a while, you can convince them they are more Libertarian than Republican. I challenge them to ignore the truth. BUT Libertarians CANT WIN they say... well it seems to me if enough of them shed their facade and went with how they truly feel then more Libertarians would be getting elected. If they don't call themselves Republicans, there's only one real option available to them. The LP. As for their religious beliefs, they need to be taught to be tolerant of others. Simple. The LP IS big enough to soak up whatever spills over from the mainstream. We need to be about the business of educating these folks. Turn them into good Libertarians.
