On August 30th, MoveOn.org, a liberal grassroots organization, held a rally opposing the Iraq war in front of the New York state capital building. The rally organizers were not expecting two Libertarian candidates to attend the anti-war protest.
Both Eric Sundwall, Libertarian candidate for New York's 20th Congressional District and Jeff Russell, Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate spoke at the MoveOn.org rally.
Sundwall stated over the phone that it was an impromptu appearance and they were not formally invited to speak at the rally. He said the rally organizers were surprised at first that Libertarian candidates showed up. Sundwall remarked that those at the rally were polite and appreciative of his and Russell's appearance. None of Sundwall's or Russell's opponents appeared at the anti-war protest.
According to Sundwall, two local newspapers, the Albany Times-Union and the Troy Record, along with three local network affiliates, covered the event.
After the MoveOn.org rally, Russell and Sundwall went to the nearby New York Board of Elections to check on the petitions they filed to qualify for the November statewide ballot. The petitions are currently being challenged. The Libertarian Party of New York believes the state Republican Party is behind the challenge.

Reader Comments:
I can understand that a majority in the Libertarian Party is very much against the Iraq War. They have stated this position eloquently as well as passionately. They have also sought and associated with other groups and oraganizations that share that view.
I am disturbed, however, that the party would associate itself with a radical leftist group like Moveon.org. This group is not only Anti-American but also opposes most positions that libertarians take. They are against the second amendment, tax and spending cuts and want more government control over the lives of individual Americans. This group also associates itself with the likes of Socialist Propogandist Micheal Moore as well as Al Franken, Jeaneane Garafolo, Randy Rhodes, Susan Sarandon and other radical leftists. They are also of the belief that the American people are dumb and idiotic and cannot decide not only issues concerning war and peace, but other issues concerning governement and society as well.
The Libertarian Party has the right to associate with whomsever it want to. No question. I just wish to God they didn't have to associate themselves wit such a vile group like MoveOn.Org.

On the other hand, how better to explode the myth that libertarians are "right-wing"? Michael Badnarik and the Green Party Presidential candidate worked out a pretty good mutual-support strategy during 2004, "headlining" third-party debates that drew more audience and coverage because the two of them were respectfully and thoughtfully facing off against each other, despite the great policy and ideological differences between them.
I don't like MoveOn, either. But if it provides a platform to speak for libertarian candidates, allowing them to reach voters who would never have thought of themsevles as "libertarian" because of a false view of the LP as a right-wing organization, then I say, "use their soapbox."
If we can't work with those who share our views on specific issues, without becoming confused with them, then it will be hard to forge the alliances and coalitions that are essential to achieve political leadership in this country. The hard part, of course, is making sure that we don't get up with fleas, if you catch my drift.
I don't agree with many of the leftist views, but I don't believe that they are anti-American. At anti-war rallies I say that I'm hear for that. Other issues can be discussed at other times. On the other hand, If I attend an NRA rally, I say that I'm here for support of the second amendment. Other issues, I may not agree with, but on that one I do. I saw Fahrenheit 9/11. I agree with Moore on that. I don't agree on other issues. Remember the slogan "War and politics make strange bedfellows.".

I really wish the LP would do more stuff like this. We need to be getting the message out that we are NOT neocons, and we should restore the old part of the LP platform on foreign policy, in its entirety. We should be adding explicit anti-war material all over the LP's home page. I'm sick of neocons calling themselves "libertarians." We need to set the record straight, once and for all.
We should also work on condemning corporate welfare, to draw in the left-wingers. The massage that we aren't just a "Republican lite" party has got to be put out there.

It's not so much associating with anything, it's about getting the message out-by any means possible.
