President Bush Wants Congress to Legitimize War on Terror Tactics

Members of Congress are putting up a fight against President Bush regarding the tracking and prosecution of suspected terrorists.

Now President Bush is sending in Cheney to help push through the president's legal requests (via CNN.com):

Vice President Dick Cheney and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten appealed to Senate Republicans during their weekly policy lunch to pass legislation that would let Bush begin prosecuting terror suspects. The legislation also would limit the circumstances under which a government interrogator could be prosecuted for mistreating a detainee.

It appears that maybe Congress is getting tired of letting the Bush administration run roughshod over the rule of law (via CNN.com):

But [White House] officials met stiff resistance from senators and House leaders who say they refuse to give the White House a blank check over the war on terror. The standoff raised questions about whether the president could unite Republicans on his anti-terror agenda before November's midterm elections.

Reader Comments:

I don't buy that Congress is resisting because they believe what the President is doing is unconstitutional.

Whatever compromise they reach will still erode our rights further.

The administration is trying to get everything it can, while it can. Because, starting January 3rd, they are almost certainly going to be facing a hostile House of Representatives and very possibly a hostile Senate.

My own personal estimate is a 220-215 Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.

I have the Senate at 52-47-1, Republican control, the 1 being Socialist Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Two of those republican seats are tenious at best and 50-49-1, with Vice President Cheney keeping Republicans in control, is also a distinct possibility.

I think President Bush is going to dig for everything he can get, because the opportunity will be gone starting January 3rd.

Now, I am NOT sure whether this nation will survive Speaker Pelosi. I guess if it can survive Neo-conservatives and Zionists, it can survive one MoonBat from San Francisco.

She is bad enough. Some of the individuals that would be chairing committees under Democratic control are truly frightening. Chairman Alcee Hastings for example. In the early 90's he had been impeached and removed from the Federal Judiciary.

Cheney in the Senate is frightening. Pelosi in the House is frightening.

Is gridlock the best we can hope for after '06?

Whew, doggy! This one just about sums it up real well.

"The Patriot Act has increased the flow of information within our government and it has helped break up terrorist cells in the United States of America. And the United States Congress was right to renew the terrorist act -- the Patriot Act."

Honestly, I don't know what he's so worried about. He has his signing statements.

Good post, and thanks for having this blog with reader comments. Reader comments are one of the critical elements of a good blog. Without reader comments a blog is just another one-way propagenda machine.

I work for the Gene Chapman For President 08 campaign. Don't ask me why. I'm about getting sick and tired of this government and politics stuff. But by God we're in this mess and there's no getting out of here alive, so what are we going to do?

I think blogging is a big part of the solution. Gene Chapman believes that every elected official should have a blog with reader comments and should blog for the people every day and be responsive to the questions and comments received at the blog. I agree with him on this.

I also think that elected officials and candidates should have a public sitemeter on their blogs to let the people have that knowledge. There is no good reason that we can see for any elected official or political candidate to hide that knowledge from the people.

Gene Chapman challenges the Libertarian Party blog to join him in leading by example and to add a public sitemeter to the LP blog and share the blog traffic stats with the people.

http://www.sitemeter.com

We made this request of the Boston Tea party and they had a sitemeter on there within five minutes.

Thanks again for blogging and keep up the good work.

I like the Days Until General Election countown counter. 51 days to go.

Warrantless searches are illegal under Federal Law. As a candidate for our presidential nomination, my position is simple: Criminals will be prosecuted. Given the number of criminals apparently created by George Bush in his administration, I anticipate asking Congress to create a Corps of Special Prosecutors to carry out the needed prosecutions.

Torturers can expect the same judgement of their peers via a judge and jury.

With respect to "I was obeying orders", well, we settled that one at Nuremberg. We settled it in a way any American should understand, and when I grew up almost every American agreed with.

Finally, it appears that we have a number of Federal agencies whose employees may have some erroneous ideas about what oaths to defend the Constitution mean. I anticipate giving these people an opportunity to build America in the private sector, and -- to the extent we need them -- making sure that we have new Federal Civil Servants who love their Country, love our Constitution, and are prepared to make sacrifices to defend them.
