Woodward Takes on Bush

On last night's broadcast of 60 Minutes, guest Bob Woodward, in an effort to promote his new book, State of Denial, set his sights clearly on the incompetence of the Bush administration.

Many of the revelations from the broadcast could be seen as shocking to the typical political observer. For instance, Woodward accused the Bush administration of covering up the severity of violence in Iraq stating:

The truth is that the assessment by the intelligence experts is that next year - now next year is 2007 - it's going to get worse. And in public you have the President and you have the Pentagon saying "no no - things are going to get better". Now. There's public, and then there's private. But what did they do with the private? They stamped it Secret. No one's supposed to know. Why is that secret? The insurgents know what they're doing - they know the level of violence and how effective they are. Who doesn't know? The American public.

Unfortunately, the typical American either believes that the situation is stabilizing or buys into the Bush line on Iraq, "We're taking the fight to the terrorists so we do not have to face them here at home."

BTW: If you buy the line above, then you must also believe that Afghanistan was just the practice field.

Another surprise is the level of involvement that Henry Kissinger has with the White House and decisions related to Iraq. Woodward, being a smart reporter recorded his conversations with Vice President Cheney. One such conversation revealed this statement by Cheney:

Of the outside people that I talk to in this job I probably talk to Henry Kissinger more than just about anybody else. He just comes by and I guess at least once a month I sit down with him.

According to Woodward, Kissinger's advice is no surprise:

Now, what's Kissinger's advice in Iraq, he declared very simply: Victory is the only meaningful exit strategy. This is so fascinating. Kissinger's fighting the Vietnam War all over again. Because in his view, the problem in Vietnam is we lost our will. That we didn't stick to it.

Now, if only someone from the Bush administration would take an hour or two out of their day to define a successful definition of success.

I'm praying everyday, Libertarians get into office.

Posted by: LIBERTARIAN at October 2, 2006 04:20 PM

Let's remember that hindsight is not wisdom.
So Libertarians get into office and do what in regards Iraq? "We never should have gone in in the first place." is certainly true, but how would we have known not to, since the LP platform
advocates the abolishment of CIA (or at least it did). So, presumbably President Browne would not have known whether or not Iraq had WMD that were a threat to the U.S. So we wait until the U.S. is attacked? If that's the LP defense plan, then let's say it loud and clear and see who salutes.
What do we do about Iraq now? Say, "You Kurds have things running well; we'll recognize you as a new independent nation. You Sunnis and Shia'a are at each other's throat; 2700 Americans died to give you a chance to live in peaceful harmony but some significant number of you believe your religious differences require you to kill one another. This religious fanaticism is not worth one more American life. Goodbye and good luck."

Creech, I think some in the LP were willing to give Iraqis some time to take over responsibility for restoring order:

Had this plan been implemented, we'd be out of Iraq by now. You're also putting a lot of faith in the CIA, because even they couldn't get their facts straight about Iraq. And let's not forget that we didn't go into Iraq because Saddam had WMDs. We went in because people were telling us that Iraq posed a threat to our country and were going to harm us any minute!

I believe, with the CIA or not (by the way, I'm not adovcating the elimination of this agency, nor do I believe the party platform calls for its elimination), we would've known if Iraq was actually planning an attack on us. Most people who were paying attention before the current Iraq conflict could've told you that Iraq posed no threat to us. And they probably DID tell you!

If we had been keeping the American people in mind after the famous Jimmy Carter Oil Embargo, we would be driving cars that run on E85 Ethonol(like Brazil). My point. No need for middle East Oil. No need to go to Iraq or Afganistan. If we were to make a big push now for energy independance, we can tell Hugo and OPEC to dance on their own oil slick. Say good bye to the Middle East all together. We have no business there. It is amazing to me that we think we can run the world. Time for us to focus on America.

What oil? This has nothing to do with oil. All of the middle-east has a lot to do with extremism and bad religion. I’m really baffled that most of us Americans do not see it as what it really is. It is a religious war. It is a war we did not start. It is a war that did not start on 9/11 either, that was just one of the battles we lost. It is a war against “people” who think cutting heads of non Moslems (and other Moslems who are not extreme enough) is God’s will and who scream Allah is great while doing it. It’s a war against people who worship a pedophile they call a prophet. It is a war of good versus evil in the clearest possible sense. And please don’t tell me that is just the few bad extremists who are like that. All of Islam is like that. There may be few in it, which are not going to admit that killing infidels is OK, but in reality they all think it is OK. And if we don't do our job over there, THEY ARE COMING TO A MALL NEAR YOU. It is time for the World to wake up and smell the sulfur or start rehearsing Allah Akbar!!!

Appeasement is a problem, never a solution. I also know that there are Xtian militants within OUR borders who want the exact same thing. You guys need to check out Sam Harris' Website (www.samharris.org) to see what I mean. Just to make things clear about myself: I'm Neither Liberal nor Conservative; I do not support the war in Iraq; and yes, I'm an atheist.

Posted by: Shane Skekel at October 3, 2006 07:53 PM

Well, let's see. We support everything Israel does, give them nearly $3 billion a year to produce weaponry to kill Palestinian and now Lebanese civilians, and we wonder why the Arab's hate us?

I believe that we as americans, should not fall for the distractions that our current leaders have SET UP for us. We should not be on foriegn soil for the purpose of war but only for the advancement of peace. While we are distracted,it appears that we are slowly losing our free and soveriegn rights. We are losing our vote, our contitution is being stepped on,and the POWER OF THE PEOPLE,is becoming endangered, soon to be extinct. As a descendant of the original colonist I carry with me a strong hope that we can make America a united state for all.I look to you my fellow countrymen(and women)to work with me to make it happen. Have faith and standfast

We need to bring our soliders home. I can't wait for The Libertarians to be elected at all levels of government

Posted by: Liberty21 at October 5, 2006 07:04 PM

I would ask for any libertarian that lives in a state where there is no LP candidate and want to donate to a Libertarian candidate or any libertarian that wants to help LP candidates nationwide. in Georgia LP candidate Garrett Micheal Hayes who is 8.4% in the polls and could force a run-off between GOP incumbent Governor and Democrat Lieutenant Governor Mark Taylor. visit www.hayesforgovernor.com

The fast that Kissinger is part of the decision making process in this war is not so much shocking as it is expected. This current administration is very good at implementing their policies why? Because they have had 30 years to figure it out. It didn't work before, so many of them who were involved took a step back to review what they had done wrong. They figured it out. The similarities of this war and Vietnam are undeniable. The speaking now of the escalation of the war in the middle east is part of the plan. Here's the plan. Do not go straight Herman Goering and stage an attack, just scale back security enough to allow one to happen. That way it absolves you of any wrong doings, just bad foresight which can be downplayed with just saying the old cliche, hindsight is always 20/20. At that point make speaches outlining everyone you want to attack and play on the support of everyone that is scared. Attack the main target with what looks like a hefty force long enough to make it look like you are actually trying to catch the one who attacked you, but never do because you will lose support. Pass Bills into law giving you larger power very fast while people are still scared. Knowing that they are too far, you just say that you know they are too far but it is just a temporary patch until a better resolution can be hashed out, full well knowing that you can make it permanent later by "denouncing the pacifists as putting the country in greater danger" to quote Mr. Goering. Attack someone who you named as an enemy fairly fast and pick one with sympathetic borders so that the infrastructure cannot be knocked out right away. Kissinger realized the Vietnam war unwinnable without knocking out the infrastructure to support war through Cambodia, Kampuchea at the time, and Laos. So this time you use that as an advantage. You do not invade those supporting the enemy unprovoked. You will not gain popular support that way, that is why it was done without the knowledge of congress which was one of the articles of impeachment against Nixon. Again you play on fears. You convince the other countries that they will be invaded by showing that if we cannot come up with a reason we will just make one up. This will cause them to tip their hand. They will further their defensive arsenal in lue of an attack against them by the United States. We then can gain support by again going to the people and scaring them into thinking they are going to get attacked again. The current administration put a puppet president up there in order to keep the real plans on the low. Kissinger as well as many others involved in the Vietnam war believe that the war was lost because people lost faith. They are very smart people. They understand that fear has way more power than faith and they will scare people, U.S. citizens or other, into doing exactly what they want in order for everything to fall into line. Unfortunately many people like myself have a lot more fear for their government than they do faith.
