South L.A. regulates health

South L.A. to Limit Fast Food Restaurants

In its attempt to fight against a obesity "epidemic" on the horizon, the South L.A. government has sought legislation to limit the number of fast food restaurants in certain zones. This new trend of "legislating health" is just another example of the increasing interference of government in the private sector and private lives.

The City Council will be asked this fall to consider an up to two-year moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in South L.A., a part of the city where fast food is at least as much a practicality as a preference.

The next step might just be getting a special pass from a physician saying you are physically fit enough to go down the snack aisle at your local grocery.

Reader Comments:

Nice protection for the restaurants that are already there.

But it's for the children! (that is, all of us.)
If citizens can't be trusted choosing a hamburger or a taco, how can we exercise any rights at all?
Let's just rewrite the Pledge: "I pledge allegiance to perpetual childhood, and wave goodbye to the rights we use to have. One nation, run by health and safety nazis, with coercion and dependence for all."

This might sound like a 'good start' but it'll hardly do spat to improve public health. Just like almost every other war on something, the war on obesity will surely be a loss.

Hey Creech that's pretty good. It's funny but true.

Creech old buddy, it's been a while!

Who's hair-brained idea was this? People don't become overweight because there are so many fast-food restaurants nearby. That's ridiculous. What's worse is that one person came up with the idea, then many more people bought it. Parallelling Chad's idea, it must have had serious economic support (bribes) of the existing restaurants.

More "feel good" irrational legislation. Perhaps this counsel should consider requiring its residents to obtain a municipal license (for a nominal fee, of course) to allow them the privilege of dining at a fast-food restaurant.

A better move, however, would be to impeach the counsel members for violating a most sacred principle of personal responsibility: choice.

This story is a prime example why more Libertarians must be elected at the local level. What is the Libertarian Party planning to do to take advantage of this?

Hmmmm...I had only considered fighting it, not taking advantage of it. I speak a lot at city council, write letters to the editor at the local paper and participate in forums (like this). What more can we do? Ideas?

Posted by: Coach Jim at September 13, 2007 08:13 AM

Coach Jim, there's probably no LP clugb in South L.A. (or any other libertarian club either). So it is hard to take community action without a community group of libertarians. Either LP has to get active on a weekly basis (not just at election time) or some non-political libertarian group has to spring up to take local action. I hear ISIL is looking for activist libertarians to form such clubs around the country.

For those Libertarians living in the greater L.A. area, attending these city counsel meetings where personal liberty is on the line should be mandatory. Even supposing there are no registered Libertarians in south L.A., there will be libertarian minded folks attending the meetings.

If a spark can start a fire, then a lone Libertarian speaking out against those who wish to legislate personal responsibility will find some willing ears.

For example, in Rivera Beach, Florida, the Palm Beach County Libertarian Party chair has been advocating libertarian positions to the city counsel where it wishes to impose a "wardrobe" ordinance prohibiting individuals from showing their boxers over their pants. He has also engaged the same counsel regarding teen curfews. Will the counsel pass the irrational ordinances? Maybe. However, the Libertarian Party wins because people who may not have heard libertarian positions before will have finally been introduced to libertarian philosophy.

I think most Americans are libertarian minded; they just don't know it yet. By continually addressing these issues, media will pay attention, and more Libertarians will ultimately win elections.

I wish to correct a typo in the previous post: In the first paragraph, please note my attempt to state that Libertarians should speak out against those who DO NOT WANT to legislate IN FAVOR OF personal responsibility.

My apologies.

This is a correction:

I get what you're all saying, but until I hear from Clark, I don't know what I really think.
