LP Monday Message: 10 reasons to end the wars now

July 5, 2010

Dear Friend of Liberty,

The long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been back in the news recently, and we just had the bizarre spectacle of the Republican National Committee Chairman saying he didn't like Obama's war in Afghanistan, while the DNC chastised him for failing to support the troops.

Here are ten reasons to end the wars now. I hope you'll take a look at some of the links.

Dear Friend of Liberty,

Independence Day is this Sunday, and we've posted a downloadable version of the Declaration of Independence you can print and hand out at Fourth of July picnics and fireworks displays. But, if nothing else, I recommend printing a copy so you can read the amazing words again for yourself.

From the first sentence:

NC poll: 8% of Liberals, 6% of Moderates, 4% of Conservatives support Libertarian Beitler

Survey USA recently published results of a poll of the U.S. Senate race in North Carolina. Libertarian Mike Beitler polled at 6 percent. Broken down by ideology, Beitler's support was strongest among liberals. Broken down by party affiliation, his support was strongest among independents.

Support by ideology:
Liberals: 8%
Moderates: 6%
Conservatives: 4%

Support by party affiliation:
Independents: 12%
Republicans: 4%
Democrats: 3%

Libertarians: The Secret Strength of the Immigration Reform Movement

Campus Progress, a "national organization that works with and for young people to promote progressive solutions to key political and social challenges," has published an online report about libertarian feelings about immigration.

Eminent domain abuse continues

Five years after the infamous Kelo v. New London decision, private property owners continue to suffer from eminent domain abuse. Fox 17 reports in Michigan:

The building at 38 Front Street doesn't look like a whole lot from the outside, but it's worth millions of dollars. It's a piece of prime real estate on the river. Leaders with Grand Valley State University are determined to make it the home of one of their fastest growing departments, the Seidman College of Business.

LP Monday Message: Help us help New York

June 28, 2010

Dear Friend of Liberty,

The Libertarian Party of New York needs our help getting its candidates on the ballot this year.

Please make a generous donation today.

The New York LP needs 15,000 valid signatures in a petition drive starting July 6 and ending August 17. That's just 6 weeks.

Libertarian candidate Mark Hinkle's election results

Mark Hinkle, national chairman of the Libertarian Party, is a candidate in a special election to fill a vacancy in the California State Senate. The election was yesterday, and the San Jose Mercury News reports:

Runoff appears likely in 15th District Senate race

The race for the seat of former Sen. Abel Maldonado appears headed to an August runoff, prolonging what has been a costly and often fierce battle between Republican Sam Blakeslee and Democrat John Laird.

LP Monday Message: fun poll, serious issues

June 21, 2010

Dear Friend of Liberty,

Before getting to more serious issues, I'm asking you to take another quick poll on slogans. We picked the top two from our primary poll, and added a new third choice. (Two choices on the ballot just aren't enough!)

Florida Libertarian candidates get on ballot

from the Libertarian Party of Florida:

Libertarian candidate and officeholder Heather Scott

Tennessee Report writes about Heather Scott, who is running for the Tennessee House of Representatives:

Heather Scott is a Libertarian, but she is running as an independent.

From her eight years as a member of the Wilson County Commission, Scott says she’s seen how programs come down from the state and federal government that may or may not be right for a particular county, yet local governments have to enact them and cover the costs that come with them.
