The Libertarian Party applauds the efforts of Campaign Zero to go beyond merely protesting the injustices perpetrated by law enforcement on citizens of the United States to proposing specific, well thought-through changes in government policy. They include:
Why the Republican Party is equally guilty of Obamacare; Libertarians explain
Republican politicians and their allies are wailing over the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling which affirmed provisions of Obamacare, blaming the president for the onerous, 17,000-page body of law that is driving up the cost of health insurance premiums and reducing health care access for Americans.
But Republicans are just as much to blame for Obamacare as the president.
Libertarian Party four-decade advocacy for marriage equality pays off with US Supreme Court decision
In a 5-4 ruling today, the US Supreme Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment requires states to license same-sex marriage and recognize those marriages entered into in other states.
Libertarian candidates, including the party’s 1976 presidential nominee, Roger MacBride, have been bravely calling for marriage equality since long before it was politically correct. In fact, they’ve been doing so when it was considered downright dangerous.
Libertarian Party joins lawsuit to open presidential debates
The Libertarian Party joined Level the Playing Field, the successor group to Americans Elect, and the Green Party to file a lawsuit aimed at the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), a Democratic- and Republican-run agency that sets rules designed to exclude third parties and independents from presidential debates.
The lawsuit is filed against the Federal Election Commission (FEC), which is also run by Democrats and Republicans and which refuses to enforce laws that the CPD is blatantly violating.
Secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership trade bill lets foreign governments and foreign special interests control American medical care, banking, the Internet, and even civil liberties
Republicans howled when Nancy Pelosi famously said, “We have to pass [Obamacare] so that you can find out what is in it." Now GOP lawmakers, who control the U.S. House, are following suit in their passage of a new Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade bill.
LP: Republican-controlled U.S. House votes to jack up military spending, skirt the sequester
228 Republicans and 41 Democrats in the U.S. House voted for a $612 billion defense authorization bill on May 15. They maneuvered the increase in military spending, which should have been prohibited by “sequester” spending caps established by the Budget Control Act of 2011, by putting some of the spending in a slush fund.
The Senate Armed Services Committee also approved a $612 billion defense authorization bill that circumvents the sequester.
Texas Republican attacks Libertarian voting rights
Republican state representative Drew Springer of Muenster, Texas has filed HB 464, a bill to require minor party nominees to pay filing fees.
Libertarian National Committee executive director Wes Benedict commented, "Republican Drew Springer's bill is a poll tax on minor parties, including the Libertarian Party. It's an injustice, and it's unconstitutional."
The bill would require all minor party nominees to pay fees to be allowed to appear on the November election ballot. The fees range as high as $5,000, depending on the office.
Libertarian Party endorses Surveillance State Repeal Act
Urges Americans: Let’s Get This Passed!
The Libertarian Party endorses the Surveillance State Repeal Act (H.R. 1466) introduced by Rep Mark Pocan (D-WI), which would substantially scale back the surveillance apparatus of the U.S. government.
Nicholas Sarwark, LP Chair said, “The Surveillance State Repeal Act would dramatically improve the privacy of Americans’ personal and business communications and restore substantial Fourth Amendment rights now routinely violated by the U.S. government.”
The Libertarian Party is America's third largest political party, founded in 1971. Our vision is for a world in which all individuals can freely exercise the natural right of sole dominion over their own lives, liberty and property by building a political party that elects Libertarians to public office, and moving public policy in a libertarian direction.
