She sits in a harbor approximately five miles from me and has welcomed millions and millions of immigrants to our shores since 1886.

Lobbyists too powerful because government is too powerful

WASHINGTON - Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle released the following statement today:

"President Obama is currently caught in a bit of a scandal over his pledge not to take campaign money from lobbyists.

"According to the New York Times, 'Despite a pledge not to take money from lobbyists, President Obama has relied on prominent supporters who are active in the lobbying industry to raise millions of dollars for his re-election bid.'

Libertarian Rupert Boneham declares run for Indiana governor

Rupert Boneham, known for his appearances on the TV show "Survivor," has declared that he will run for governor of Indiana as a Libertarian in 2012.

In the design of America's founders, the states are supposed to be centers of democratic experiment. They're not supposed to be uniform. For example, even though alcohol Prohibition ended in 1933, local laws restricting sales exist in 33 states. In Arkansas, more than half of 75 counties prohibit alcohol sales.

Libertarian in Louisiana election for governor

The state of Louisiana held a gubernatorial election on October 22, 2011. There were ten candidates on the ballot: Libertarian Scott Lewis, a Republican, four Democrats, and four independents.

Lewis received 12,517 votes (1.2%).

LP Monday Message: Libertarian Party HQ must move

Dear Libertarian Party supporter,

I'd like your help.

The lease on our national Libertarian Party headquarters is up at the end of February 2012.

The landlord has indicated they'll be raising the rates 10% to almost $140K per year.

The building (the infamous Watergate Building) is only 60% leased as it is, so we think they're trying to get everyone to leave.

Ed Thompson, noted Wisconsin Libertarian, passes away

Ed ThompsonWe have received news that Ed Thompson, a noted Wisconsin Libertarian, died of pancreatic cancer today at the age of 66.

Ed Thompson was the 2002 Libertarian Party candidate for Wisconsin Governor, receiving 11% of the vote. He also served as Mayor of Tomah, Wisconsin, and later ran for office as a Republican. Ed's brother, Tommy Thompson, a Republican, was 42nd Governor of Wisconsin and a current candidate for U.S. Senate.

Politifact gives nod to Libertarian claim about Rick Perry

On August 10, 2011, LP Executive Director Wes Benedict released a video statement targeted at presidential candidate Rick Perry. In the video, Benedict said, "Rick Perry, I support amnesty and I think you do too. You supported a guest worker program to help people who would otherwise be illegal aliens."

Politifact has rated Benedict's claim "mostly true."
