LP Monday Message: Japan and Libertarian principles

Dear Friend of Liberty,

It's with great sadness that I read about the natural and nuclear disasters in Japan. I feel sympathy for the victims of these tragedies, and I hope the best for them as the tragedies continue to unfold and as they struggle to recover.

I've been asked by several people what Libertarians think about the events in Japan.

It's times like these that I like to rely on our Libertarian Party principles, and also look to what some of the top libertarian think tanks are publishing on these issues.

They hate us because we bomb them, says Libertarian Chair

WASHINGTON - Giving little thought to the lessons of history, President Obama has begun attacking Libya with the full support of virtually every member of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans. Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle issued the following statement today:

"President Obama's decision to order military attacks on Libya is only surprising to those who actually think he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. He has now ordered bombing strikes in six different countries, adding Libya to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen.

Buckeye Firearms Association endorses Libertarian Mark Noble for Columbus City Council

Today the Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) announced their endorsement of Mark Noble for Columbus City Council.

Mark Noble has been involved with and actively advocated firearms freedoms in past runs for office. He’s a life member of the Gun Owners of America (as a candidate, achieving their highest rating) and both he and his wife Loretta are NRA Certified Firearms Instructors.

Libertarian Party sues FEC over bequests

WASHINGTON - The Libertarian National Committee (LNC) is challenging certain aspects of the McCain-Feingold political speech restrictions in a new lawsuit filed today against the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

In 2007, a Libertarian Party supporter passed away, leaving the party over $217,000 in his will -- an amount over seven times the maximum annual federal contribution limit. Under the speech restrictions challenged today, the party must wait years to fully access this contribution.

HB 418 withdrawn by bill author Berman

AUSTIN- In a victory for The Libertarian Party of Texas, State Representative Leo Berman (R -District 6) withdrew HB 418 on Monday. The bill would have imposed filing fees on third-party and independent candidates, resulting in an intimidating burden for these candidates on future ballots.
