The Libertarian Party is hiring a Communications Director

Reports To: Executive Director

Job Summary

  • Responsible for planning, development and implementation of all of the Libertarian Party’s outreach strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities.
  • Oversee development and implementation of support materials and services for affiliates in the area of marketing, outreach, and messaging.
  • Direct the efforts of staff and contractors in the marketing department and coordinate at the strategic and tactical levels with other departments.
  • Personify Libertarian Party values: respectful, positive, principled, innovative, driven, action-oriented, responsive, solutions-focused, liberty-centric, and fun.

Primary Relationships

  • The position reports to the Executive Director and serves as a member of the leadership team charting the direction of the Organization, assuring its accountability to all constituencies, and ensuring its effective operation.
  • Within the Organization, the position has primary working relationships with the Executive Director, senior management team, staff of the marketing department, and service providers.
  • Outside the Organization, the position coordinates, primarily, with the media.

Principal Accountabilities: Marketing, Messaging, and Public Relations

  1. Responsible for creating, implementing, and measuring the success of: a cohesive and consistent marketing, outreach, and public relations program that will enhance the Party’s image and position within the marketplace and the general public, and facilitate communications to external and internal audiences; and, all Party marketing, communications and public relations activities and materials including publications, media relations, and so forth. Supervise employees and contractors, including goal setting and professional development.

  2. Responsible for editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of all Party publications. Coordinate the appearance of all Party print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, etc.

  3. Coordinate media interest in the Party and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests. Act as a Party representative with the media, including producers and reporters, including by managing incoming press inquiries and arranging appearances and interviews. Create and disseminate press releases, blog posts on LP.org website, quarterly LP News and monthly Pledge News, coverage for Libertarian Party events and activities, etc.

  4. Monitor media for Libertarian Party mentions and report on trends and metrics. Ensure that the Party regularly conducts relevant market research. Keep informed of developments in the fields of marketing, outreach, and public relations, not-for-profit management and governance, and the specific business of the Party and use this information to help the Organization operate with initiative and innovation.

  5. Coordinate social media team activities and synergize with overall organizational messaging strategy.

  6. Develop, coordinate, and oversee programs, technical assistance, and resource materials to assist elected officials and affiliates in the marketing, communications and positioning of their activities. Provide counsel to affiliates on marketing, outreach, and public relations.

  7. Lead projects as assigned, such as project marketing and special events.

  8. Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives and report progress to the Executive Director, Chair and Board (LNC).

Qualifications Required

  1. Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, outreach, and public relations activities. Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and personal sales skills.

  2. Experience developing and managing budgets, and hiring, training, developing, supervising, and appraising personnel. Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, making presentations, and negotiating with media. Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.

  3. Computer literacy in word processing, data base management and page layout. Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams. Strong oral and written communications skills. Ability to manage multiple projects at a time. Good judgment, initiative, and ability to anticipate problems and follow through with confidence. Out-of-town, overnight travel is required.

  4. Experience working with volunteers is desirable.
