If you turned on the news last week, you probably saw images of overflowing trash at national parks during the government shutdown.

When a Libertarian Party member in another state suggested that Libertarians organize a trash pickup at the National Mall, I reached out right away to the nearby affiliate leaders to share the idea.

Less than 72 hours after a Facebook event was created by the Libertarian Party of DC, dozens of Libertarians teamed up to voluntarily keep the National Mall clean. You can read the press release from Sunday’s event here or watch the video footage here.

We made new friends, burned a lot of calories, left the National Mall cleaner than we found it, and seemed to make a good impression on all of the National Mall visitors who stopped to ask us what we were doing.

As Joe Bishop-Henchman, LNC at-large rep and chair of LPDC was quoted, “It’s an example of us practicing what we preach. We want the private sector to step up when government can’t, so that’s what we’re doing here.”

Libertarians across the country have been inspired by the DC and Northern Virginia affiliates and other federal park trash pickups are being organized right now.  Click the button below to find an event organized near you:
